The Benefits of Outdoor Play for Young Children
(Inspired by research shared in The Neuroscience of 0–5 Year Olds by Dr. Gemma Goldenberg)
Did you know that being outdoors can make a big difference to your child’s happiness, health, and learning?
Research shows that most children (87%) feel really happy when they’re in nature, yet children today spend less time outside than previous generations. Studies have found that time spent outdoors helps children in many important ways:
Supports focus and attention
Children who spend more time outside show fewer signs of inattention and hyperactivity and perform better on memory and attention tasks. Even a short walk in nature can help children concentrate and feel calmer.
Improves physical health
Outdoor play supports children’s balance, agility, and overall fitness. It can also help reduce the risk of obesity and other health issues linked to spending too much time indoors or on screens.
Boosts wellbeing, sleep, and self-regulation
Being outside — especially in natural environments — lowers stress, reduces blood pressure, and helps children feel more relaxed and balanced.
-
Better sleep: Time in natural light and fresh air helps regulate children’s body clocks, leading to deeper, more restful sleep.
-
Better self-regulation: Outdoor sensory experiences — like feeling the breeze, touching leaves, or playing with mud — can have a calming effect, helping children manage their emotions, build patience, and develop resilience.
Supports overall development and learning
Children who spend time in green spaces tend to have healthier body weights, stronger immune systems, and improved wellbeing. Many children who find it hard to focus indoors thrive when learning and exploring outside.
At nursery, we use outdoor time as a chance for children to ‘reset’ from busy, noisy spaces, reconnect with nature, and strengthen their ability to focus, rest, and regulate their emotions.
So next time you can — wrap up warm, head outdoors together, and enjoy the natural world. Even a few minutes outside can make a big difference to your child’s sleep, mood, and self-regulation!
